Blanchard Rotary Surface Grinders
Blanchard grinders, as they’re used in grinding metal and ceramics, provide a high degree of precision flatness and parallelism as they grind while holding workpieces on a round magnetic chuck, rotating on a vertical spindle beneath a grinding wheel that is rotating in the opposite direction on another vertical spindle. This opposite rotation of the chuck and the grinding wheel allows a Blanchard to cancel out the effects of wear that occurs to the grinder and the grinding wheel, while grinding. So, even half-worn-out Blanchard grinders will hold rather close tolerances if operated by a skilled and experienced operator. Blanchards are widely used in machine shops and industrial plant maintenance shops nationwide, for both repairs and production.
Blanchard Grinder Sizes and Models
The size of a Blanchard grinder is based on the diameter of the magnetic chuck, while the model of Blanchard grinder is based on a combination of the diameters of the grinding wheel and magnetic chuck. Therefore, a model 18-36 Blanchard grinder has a grinding wheel that is 18 inches in diameter and a magnetic chuck that’s 36 inches in diameter.
Blanchards range in size from 16 inches up to 120 inches, although some are specially ordered at 144 inches. Most Blanchard grinders will grind workpieces that are 12 to 24 inches in height, but some grinders are ordered with 36 inches of vertical clearance, allowing the grinding of taller workpieces.
Blanchard Coolant & Filtration Systems
Blanchard grinder coolant systems are one of two types: wet-based and dry-based. A wet-based system, which is found in most smaller Blanchards grinders (16-20 inches), is located in the base of the grinder.
Most dry-based systems, which serve large Blanchard grinders (60 inches and up), always have external coolant systems. These are located in a tank outside, typically positioned behind the grinder. Those that do not have an external tank are hooked up to a central coolant system that serves several other grinders. Most, but not all of the dry-based coolant systems, have sludge conveyors located in the bottom of the external coolant tank, for grinding sludge removal.
Mid-sized Blanchard grinders (36 and 42 inches) can be wet or dry-based. Some may have a drag-out conveyor belt to clean out sludge that collects in the base of the tank.
Blanchard Grinding Wheels
The grinding wheels used with Blanchards are of two basic types: segmented and solid. Segmented grinder wheels consist of wedge-shaped grinding segments contained by a segmented-type grinding wheel holder. These wheels are used for general-purpose grinding of metal workpieces.
Solid-type grinding wheels are shaped like an upside-down bowl and held in place by a solid-type wheel holder. Normally, these wheels are used to grind ceramics or extra hard metal workpieces.
Grinding wheel manufacturers are usually good about advising which type of grinding wheel should be used for a particular type of ceramic or metal.
