Horizontal Boring Mills Uses and History
Horizontal boring mills are one of the most popular forms of chip-making machinery used in machine shops and manufacturing plants and maintenance/repair shops, the world over. As early as the 1800s, there were primitive forms of the boring mill used to produce large gun barrels and cylinders for steam engines etc. Today, boring mills are used to do not only boring but also drilling, milling, reaming, facing, tapping and threading.
Horizontal boring mills can be found in machine shops of all sizes and in manufacturing plants producing a variety of things; anywhere rigidity is required in drilling or boring something. The oil industry uses many horizontal boring mills for both production of new equipment and for repairs. Horizontal boring mills of all sizes are used in the military/defense industry to bore gun barrels and also to drill holes for bearings used many places in most military equipment. In any industry requiring the drilling or boring of large holes in plate or castings, is where you will see horizontal boring mills in use, not to mention operations needing to do facing or threading.
Brands of Horizontal Boring Mills
There are a large number of both domestic and foreign companies that provide boring mills today. By far, Giddings & Lewis, better known as G&L, is still the very most popular brand of boring mills. We sell lots of Giddings & Lewis horizontal boring mills. Lucas boring mills are another well-made brand and popular but not nearly as popular as G&L.
Wotan is a brand of horizontal boring mills that is rapidly becoming very popular and they often come with all the popular accessories such as a built-in rotary table, facing head and tail stock. When Wotans become available on the used market, they are usually late models and in nice condition. We sell a large number of late-model Wotan boring mills.
One brand of boring mills that is somewhat down on the popularity list is Scharmann. They are well made heavy duty machines and if you can find one in good condition, it will likely serve you well for a long time to come. Tos is a fairly popular brand of boring mills and like Wotan, they are usually late models as they hit the used market and generally well equipped with extras.
Other brands often seen on the used market are: Cincinnati Gilbert, Union, Kuraki, Toshiba and Sacem. There are numerous brands available to choose from on the used market when you need a used or reconditioned or rebuilt horizontal boring mill.
Sizes of Horizontal Boring Mills
The “size” of boring mills is not determined by overall dimensions of the machine, but instead, the diameter of the spindle that does the boring.
- Smaller two and three-inch spindle-size machines are fine for machining workpieces that are relatively small and lightweight.
- Four and five-inch spindle-size boring mills are the most popular in size and have enough table and height capacity to machine the great majority of jobs that hit most shop floors.
- The still larger six and eight-inch spindle boring mills are used mostly for machining very large and heavy workpieces as seen in mining and heavy construction industries and also in the railroad industry.
The various sizes of spindles will have certain tapers that allow special tooling to be held by the spindle. Spindle tapers are available in Number 7, 40 taper and 50 taper with 50 being by far the most popular, due to its extra strength. Number 7 taper is usually wanted for high RPM fast drilling applications. As far as overall dimensions of boring mills, they will vary greatly in size depending the length of travels a particular machine was ordered with, when ordered from the factory. The travels being cross travel, saddle travel and vertical travel. It’s not uncommon for larger boring mills to have travels in all directions of ten to twelve feet.
Table sizes vary quite a bit from one boring mill to the next, with most having a table in the range of four feet by six feet. Two and three-inch boring mills have smaller tables of course but six and eight-inch mills will often have tables as large as six feet by twelve feet.
Boring Mill Accessories

Facing heads allow you to face to flatness a cube-shaped workpiece, similar to what you’d do with a regular milling machine. A tailstock will allow you to hold long workpieces like when you’re boring a military gun barrel or a large diameter and long hydraulic cylinder. A rotary table can be one “built in” from the factory or it may be one that is added on, on top of the basic t-slotted table below.
