History of OBI & Gap Frame Presses: OBI and gap frame presses came about around the time of WWI but the ancestors of stamping presses in general have been around since the 1800s. The earliest manufacturers of OBI and gap presses were well known companies like Minster, Bliss, Niagara and a few others. Today, there are many brands being built, both foreign and U.S. Where obi & gap frame presses are used: Both obi and gap frame type presses, are in use today in metal stamping operations of all sizes, from one or two man shops up to the largest, most advanced manufacturing plants. Any metal stamping operation making smaller parts will typically have one or more OBI and/or gap frame stamping presses. Though most of the stamping facilities use OBI and gap presses for manufacturing automotive parts, they are also important in stamping components of home appliances, building and military hardware and numerous other smaller things stamped from sheet metal. Brands of obi & gap frame presses: As mentioned above, there are several brands of both OBI and gap frame presses on the market now. Minster is the most popular brand but Bliss, Komatsu, Aida and Stamtec are also highly popular these days. Other brands also include Niagara, Clearing, Rouselle, Federal, Walsh, Johnson, Danly etc. There are many brands to choose from in both obi and gap frame presses. OBI/gap frame press sizes: Both Obi and gap frame presses are sold in a variety of tonnage sizes, ranging from maybe two tons, all way up to four hundred tons. Bed sizes today range from 4″ x 6″ up to 42″ x 96″ or longer. The most popular sizes of obi presses are 45, 60, 75, and 110 ton. Regarding gap presses, the most popular size is 110 ton. OBI/Gap Frame Press Specifications: Obi and gap frame presses both, are built as either single or double crank presses, long bed presses, usually being double crank for side load reasons.
