History Of Reciprocating Surface Grinders
Surface grinders have been in use for more than a hundred years; no one seems to really know how long for sure. Many of the original manufacturers of surface grinders have now gone out of business or changed hands. As the present manufacturers try to put forth modern images, they don’t seem to want to talk much about the past. There is little history to be found, on a surface grinder.
Reciprocating surface grinders have changed very little over the decades except for the controls. The addition of incremental down feed has really made surface grinders more productive, allowing an operator to walk away and do other tasks as the grinding head automatically feeds down in set increments. Today, we of course have CNC controls making surface grinders extremely versatile and productive. The controls are what have really changed.
Where Reciprocating Surface Grinders Are Used
Now, reciprocating surface grinders are in operation in almost every machine shop to be found and in machining and/or maintenance areas of most modern manufacturing plants. There are few machine or tool and die shops today, that don’t have at least one if not several surface grinders of whatever size. Surface grinding is a basic and vital step in machining almost any metal part that isn’t cylindrical in shape and where surface finish is important. There is no one particular industry where surface grinders aren’t normally found; they are used in the metalworking field in general; used by machine shops, tool and die shops, defense contractors, aerospace facilities, new and used replacement auto parts manufacturers, manufacturers of hardware; all, users of reciprocating surface grinders.
Brands Of Reciprocating Surface Grinders
There are reciprocating type surface grinders of many brands now, after many new brands have entered the marketplace in addition to all the older names such as Mattison, Blohm, Thompson, Gallmeyer & Livingston, Brown & Sharpe, and others. In recent years ones like Okamoto, Favretto, Chevalier, Acer, Kent, Elb and others have now become popular. Among small to medium size surface grinders, Okamotos are now by far the most popular due to their accuracy, speed and user-friendliness. In larger surface grinders, Mattison and Thompson continue to be fastest sellers due to their ruggedness and simplicity. However, Okamoto sells quite a lot of the sixty to eighty-inch long grinders. In grinders larger than eighty inches, Mattison and Thompson are king.
